Ignitis Solar Irradiation and Potential Calculator

Digitalization | Retail services

DESCRIPTION

The Solar potential calculator is designed to help customers self-assess the possibilities of establishing an individual solar power plant. The tool helps to accurately measure the technical parameters of the roof (area, proper slope, direction, slope, etc.) and predicts what solar power plant can be installed as well as how much it would cost and what the retribution would be according to the needs of consumers.

PROBLEM

Individual PV installations in Lithuania are rapidly gaining popularity and attention. However, the cost-benefit balance may vary significantly depending on the roof area, orientation, type and solar irradiation. It is not easy for a regular electricity consumer to turn their head around and understand the technicalities that are important for solar PV. In order to make this task easy, express Ignitis expertise in the area of solar PV and support consumers the Ignitis solar calculator tool has been tested enabling easy, quick and accurate estimation of solar PV benefits on a specific roof or on the ground.

SOLUTION

The calculator combines geospatial, solar irradiance, LiDAR (laser imaging, detection, and ranging), orthophotography maps and meteorological data to reveal the solar potential of every building roof.

STATUS AND PROGRESS

Currently, the tool is available in Vilnius city and Klaipėda city in Lithuania.

The solar potential calculator is expected to be relaunched as a business-as-usual public tool for customers in the first part of 2022. The improved and upgraded tool will conveniently enable users understand their roof or on-ground space suitability for a solar PV plant and will recommend the optimal set-up. The calculations will also be available for the entire territory of the country.
