ESO (main Lithuanian DSO for electricity and gas) is partnering up with Vilnius University (VU) scientists for a project directed to motivate residential users be more energy efficient. Project team will analyse electricity consumption patterns and behavior by utilizing smart meters data from residential customers, as well as input information on ESO Smart mobile application.
According to EU energy efficiency goals by 2025 at least 80 percent of EU residents should use smart meters in their households. In Lithuania the plan is to roll-out smart meters for electricity users in 2021-2023 period. After that around 90 percent of consumed electricity will be metered using new smart meters.
One of the main goals of collaboration with the scientist from VU is that residential users should reach and install new ESO Smart mobile application if they already have the automated meters until the beginning of the next year. The new ESO Smart mobile application will be functional and informative or the users, will show hourly electricity consumption, also recommendations for more rational use of electricity. With the help of the smart app, it is expected to contribute not only to the reduction of consumers' electricity bills, but also to the more sustainable operation of the entire Lithuanian electricity system.
Innovation team from ESO believes that innovative products will provide additional benefits for the end customers. While our VU scientist expect to analyse the electricity usage of regular residential customer and provide them information and suggestions how to be more sustainable and more efficient.
In 2017 ESO implemented pilot project and installed 3000 smart meters for residential users. Pilot project results showed that customers using new smart meters were able to lower their electricity consumption up to 7 percent. Customers especially appreciated the fact that in general there was no need to write the meter readings anymore, which allowed not to worry about calculating the electricity bill.
The plan is to create an application until the beginning of next year. The households that already have a = automated metering will be invited to take part in the research and to assess benefit and functionalities of the mobile app. It is expected that this cooperation will allow creating new recommendations during the project that will help submit offers to the users, how to use electrical energy more rationally.
Project name “How application of non-price measures may help to increase energy efficiency at the needed time” (according to the program of actions financed from the EU investment funds “Promotion Research and Development and Innovation”, project No. 01.2.2-LMT-K-718-02-0007). One of the physical performance indexes of this project is smart application used to spread information tools.
