Solar energy expansion is building up capacity really fast, many new solar parks are connecting to the grid and offering solar power to prosumers through solar park platforms. Also, private homeowners install solar on their rooftops and provide solar energy for their homes. To reach Lithuanian national goals for renewable power every alternative must be evaluated for further expansion of renewables. Rooftops of apartment buildings seem like a reasonable location for additional power plants to be installed.
A study was made to evaluate the suitability of apartment, commercial and public building rooftops for solar panel installation, according to the pathway reaching the national renewable energy development objectives. Factual building consumption data was compared to the actual generation of the potential solar installation through each hour of the year, assessing conserved excess electricity that is delivered back to the distribution grid. The assessment showed that potentially up to 270MW of solar power may be installed on top of apartment buildings in Lithuania.
The next step is to initiate solar power plants on apartment buildings incentive, to integrate optimal size PV on the rooftops to optimize self-consumption of generated energy. The project is coordinated together with ESO and the Ministry of Energy.
