Fiber optics combined with Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology enables advanced, cost-effective perimeter security for energy infrastructure. This approach offers a reliable and scalable alternative to traditional surveillance methods.
Conventional perimeter surveillance for large infrastructure sites often demands significant financial investment, ongoing maintenance, and a large security workforce. A vast network of CCTV cameras is expensive to install and repair, difficult to monitor effectively in real time, and prone to issues such as poor optical re
Distributed Acoustic Sensing systems use standard fiber optic cables to transform entire perimeters into intelligent sensing networks. These cables are affordable to install, require minimal upkeep as they are buried or shielded from the environment, and reduce the need for constant manual monitoring. The system can detect disturbances—such as the movement of people or vehicles—at or near the perimeter and pinpoint the location of the activity, significantly enhancing situational awareness and response times.
The pilot project has been successfully completed, and the system’s functionality was verified through on-site experiments. The outcomes met expectations, and the solution will be evaluated for integration into future projects. The possibility of retrofitting existing assets with the DAS solution is also being evaluated.
